Wild Men, Wild Alaska

Wild Men, Wild Alaska:  By: Rocky McElveenI personally like the book Wild Men, Wild Alaska because the author Rocky McElveen paints such a vivid picture of a remote, wild land that I have yet to see. Rocky’s the owner of Alaskan-Adventures and has been a professional hunting and fishing guide in America’s largest state for twenty-plus years. McElveen shares numerous tales which are loaded with adrenaline and involves brushes with death and extreme adventure. As you would expect with a book about Alaska, Rocky’s stories contain amazing grizzly encounters, life threatening blizzards and harrowing plane and boat crashes in the most remote country our nation has to offer. This rugged Alaskan is full of character as are his guides, pilots and clients. Many of McElveen’s tales strike a familiarity with the reader because they involve celebrity clients like Major League baseball players Mike Moore and Dave Dravecky, preacher Franklin Graham and President George Bush Sr. Rocky guided the President on a fishing expedition and his interactions with the Commander and Chief as well as the thorough Secret Service accompanying him is very interesting. Moore, Dravecky and Graham all tag bears and the one-armed Dravecky makes good on a 600 yard shot. Wild Men, Wild Alaska goes beyond hunting and fishing.  This book speaks of the remarkable ‘can do spirit’ of the people who inhabit this wilderness and also of the adventurous visitors who challenge themselves and walk away enriched. Rocky is a strong man of faith who inspires men to stare down life’s trials and take on the physical and spiritual challenges of life. Included is the story of an arson incident that involves the author’s lodge which translates to his livelihood. Rocky concludes his book’s introduction with the following statement, “To all who read this, come join me on my continuing journey, where men must pit their strength, their wits, their lives, and ultimately, their faith, against the unpredictable, wildness of Alaska, and in so doing, find their true hearts.”Personally, this ranks as one of the best outdoor books that I have read.
