Hunting can be a family affair!

While driving to a meeting in Mason Michigan tuesday night I received a call from the editor of Quality Whitetail Magazine, Lindsey Thomas. If your a member of the QDMA you know what an informative publication it is. Anyway he was telling me of a family in Hillsdale Michigan that wrote him the other day and the awsome buck that their 12 year old daughter harvested during the youth hunt the last week end in September.

With out telling you the girls name, her buck has been measured but not offically as of yet do to the required drying time, but will go over 160" and has 16 points. The import thing here is that this young girl and her parents weren't even deer hunters most of their lives.  Dad became interested several years back and began hunting and then started to transform the property into more of a deer haven. They attended several of the South East Michigan QDMA branch events ( food plot days and branch meetings)over the last several years and thought that it was important to start to get involved with the local deer herd and the habitat improvements that they could make on their farm with information they had gained though the QDMA event and then by joining the QDMA. Dad also began to pass up young bucks and noticed that he was making a difference.

This last year the family even went so far to hire Neil Dougherty of North Country Whitetails to help them improve the hunting habitat on their property. They had met Neil at one of the South East Michigan QDMA food plot days in august.

Now the family not only hunts togather but also enjoys doing food plots and habitat projects on the property. In many cases I see the same thing with folks that get involved with QDM and the QDMA. The work performed on their wood lots and food plots is as much a joy to them as  actually the hunting part of the QDM experience. The importance here though is as much a part of taking your kids out and having the family time doing something everyone can help with as is the total QDM experience with the family.
