1. One of the most widely used methods of turkey hunting is setting up early in the morning near roosting birds. Favored roosting sites are tall pines or mature hardwood trees near water.
2. It is generally easier to call a bird uphill rather than downhill.
3. Avoid set-ups that require the bird to cross a fence, creek or river. The birds will usually "hang-up" and fail to come in all the way.
4. Use a portable tent blind. They counter the number one defense of the turkey, his eyesight, by concealing movement.
5. Hens often go to their nest by 10 AM. This is a good time to be afield because the lonesome males are often out looking for a date at this time.
6. When it rains go to the open fields. The falling rain prevents the birds from hearing as well so they go to the open fields and rely on their excellent vision to detect predators.
7. Turkeys tend to be call shy in the evening. Try to ambush them on their way back to their roosting sites when hunting this time period.
8. Take food and water. After getting up ultra-early and carrying weapon, calls, decoys, blind etc. you need to replenish your energy.
9. Once you have gotten your bird. Continue to go out with friends and family by calling and/or filming for them. It extends your season and creates good memory's with those you care about.
10. As always, HAVE FUN!
