January issue of Woods-N-Water News!

The current issue of Woods-N-Water News has Q1 Buck Pole participant Linc Lafountain on the cover with his B&C 9-pt. that Linc shot in Oakland County. Congratulations Linc!

Also included in this issue is the disappointing story about CBM disqualifying a previous state record buck after it was discovered that the entry had actually been shot at a high fence game ranch. This individual also had all of his other entries removed including a state record turkey.

Christmas gifts - Proud Hunter, Proud Yooper & Wild Men, Wild Alaska

Tis the season to buy Christmas gifts. Here are two excellent books that any hunter would enjoy. If you are fortunate enough to be a guess on someone's property then these books would make great gifts for them as well. What follows are my own personal reviews of these two books. I strongly recommend that you get yourself a copy as well!

QDMA County in LP

Did you know that there is a county in the LP that is referred to as the QDMA County because they have established antler restrictions there? In Leelanau County a buck must have at least 3 pts on one side. This area is more famous for it's ample fruit orchards, vineyards and tourism industry then it is for producing big bucks. Leelanau sits just north of Traverse City and is essentially the pinky area of our "Handy" LP map. This year Zack Heller arrowed a potential county record typical that net green scored the Boone & Crockett bench mark of 170 inches.

"Night Hunters"

Big Bucks are a limited resource, and poachers steal away precious opportunities for law-abiding, license-buying sporstmen. I have wrtitten an article about poaching which appears in the December/January issue of North American Whitetail titled Night Hunters in their Trails and Tails column. Remember, the DNRE phone number is printed on your legal hunting license.

What's your Dream Buck?

Here we are about to enter the infamous Michigan firearm season and I know that many of you out there are like me and have Big Bucks constantly on the brain. So as these Michigan Monsters stand broadside as you take the dream shot what is he? Is he super wide and heavy like Brian VanDorsten's buck or is he freaky nasty with tines all over like the amazing Kyle Bonner buck? Would you rather shoot a 170 Typical or a 195 Non-Typical? I am curious Michigan, What is your Dream Buck?

Fort Custer Bears?

A friend of mine helped out with the handicap hunter hunt at Fort Custer and reported that two individuals (guide and hunter) saw a pair of bears there. I know that two summers ago a pair was seen by multiple people including B.C. police officers near the downtown river. Three summers ago a bear was shot within the city limits by B.C. police when it was treed in the early morning by an elementary school. Has anyone else seen bears in southern MI? A bobcat was found as a roadkill near Albion a couple of years ago. Anyone seeing Bobcats in southern MI?

Future Hunting Bans

Future hunting bans will be enacted if hunters stand down. This is a powerful statement but true. Unfortunately, the activity of hunting that sustains millions in rural America is strongly opposed by a small fraction of society that is very active and well funded. In the Battle Creek Enquirer a letter to the editor signed by Michael Markarian, President Humane Society Legislative Fund, Washington D.C. recently wrote a letter of support for Mark Schauer that disparged his opponent Tim Walberg for supporting Trophy Hunting. This Washigtlon D.C.
